Jesus has referred to Himself in the third person, using the titles “Son of God” and “Son of Man.” As He transitions from this portion of the speech (Jn. 5:19–30) to the next (Jn. 5:31–47), He restates His original claim, “The Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing” (v. 19), only now in the first person (“I”) Jn. 5;30,31 . He was making these claims about Himself.
